Equipment Retrospective: Celestron AstroMaster 130

Equipment Retrospective: Celestron AstroMaster 130

This is a fantastic, light Newtonian which works very well as a visual tool given its 130mm aperture. Once collimated, stars are pin-sharp with good contrast. It is easy to mount, easy to move and easy to store.

It is, however, made of mostly plastic and thin metal sheeting. There is no way it can carry the weight of a DSLR for astrophotography. With the naked eye, one can see the whole setup bend.

It does what it says on the tin, but it does not say 'Astrophotography' on the tin. You could invest in a 1 1/4" camera at at least triple the price of the optics, but I'm not doing that.
